Company
Aina (pronounced eye-na) Imagery is a fine art photography company based on the island of O’ahu. Founded by photographer Andrew McHowell, Aina’s objective is to compose and capture the most divine photographs of Hawaii. After Aina Imagery’s successful public debut in 2009, Andrew has been busy with consignment work in galleries and hotels throughout Waikiki. In 2011, Aina Imagery opened its doors to its first gallery located in Hawaii Kai, minutes from iconic spots such as Haunama Bay, Sandy Beach and Koko Crater. In 2014, Andrew published his book "New Landscapes" featuring over 70 images from extraordinary locales. "Andrew is a young photographer. This book, like many first books, portrays the threshold of his talent and personal vision." David Ulrich
AINA's logo mark is inspired by the frequent subject matter within the artist's work: rip curl waves and beautiful hawaiian foliage landscapes. The mark combines the wave and leaf, while hinting at the artist's lens. This logo mark is paired with custom adjusted letterforms for a cohesive logo that works with both image and word mark, as well as each piece standing strong solo.
Photographer
Andrew is a self-taught landscape photographer. Having learned basic photography from books and heaps of trial and error, Andrew’s skills with a camera has evolved by studying the old techniques of Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter. Along with his meticulous study of past masters, it was Andrew’s decision to return to the magic and texture of photographing with film that has separated his work from other landscape photographers. Andrew developed his passion for landscape photography through his diverse travels around the World. With a keen appreciation for the beauty of different landscapes, Andrew strives to artfully document each locale in an inspiring way that will resonate with locals and visitors alike. Andrew uses only the finest German optics, insuring the highest possible image quality. Working with Velvia film due to its high saturation, contrast and sharpness, Andrew shoots medium and large format. The 6×17 format being his favorite.
equiptment
Andrew’s choice of camera equipment speaks greatly to his ethos on photography. Not merely content with the typical tools of the trade, Andrew has sought out the most innovative cameras to capture his world class imagery. For panoramic landscapes, Andrew shoots with the Linhof Technorama 617 IIIs. This German camera produces striking images that are captured on Velvia 50 film, giving vast landscapes unique textures. Additionally, Andrew shoots with the Hasselblad H4D-60, a Swedish medium format digital camera that features an incredible 60 Mpixel sensor. The Hasselblad is a technological masterpiece that offers superior image quality.
